Marianne Meijer (1935-2020) An Obituary by Anthea Martin
Marianne Meijer was born in Holland and came to South Africa in 1957 as a young married woman with her journalist husband, Sjoerd Meijer. Marianne started painting and through her interest in art became an active KZNSA member, where she was a council member and president. She also served on the board of directors of The African Art Centre for many years and promoted the centre from the 1970s to recent times. She was also a journalist and wrote a weekly art column for the Natal Mercury. These columns are an invaluable resource for the arts in Durban. Her dedication to her writing and her own art, plus her support of other artists is legendary. Her contribution to the Cultural life of Durban was outstanding and she will be greatly missed.
