NEW EXHIBITION PLANNED BY THE AFRICAN ART CENTRE
May 2nd 2020 Opening in the Phansi Museum Gallery on Saturday at  11.30 a.m.

ENCHANTED CREATURES OF THE FOREST

- curated by Anthea Martin and Phindile Mkhize of the African Art Centre

5 artists from Northern KwaZulu-Natal will show their wood sculptures in the Phansi Gallery Space:

Timothy Mlambo, Themba Khumalo, Bongani Khumalo, Widus Mtshali, Sibusiso Gumede, have been working together for many years, being part of a family group plus friends and neighbours in the forest at Mangusi in Northern KwaZulu-Natal.

Imagination runs riot in hand-carved indigenous wood.  Some sculptures are decorated with paint, with Timothy Mlambo and Themba Khumalo being experts.

Other designs are burnt in with a hot iron wire (pyrography), to create patterns which enhance the forms. Widus Mtshali and Sibusiso Gumede are masters of this technique.

Phindile and Anthea met with Timothy Mlambo, Themba Khumalo,  Widus Mtshali and Sibusiso Gumede on Friday 14th February 2020, showing them their past masterpieces to inspire them to make original sculptures for this exhibition.
